Study 57: Art Resolutions-A deeper study

Art Resolutions is a self-imposed initiative to create an art study everyday for a year. Welcome to Study 57.

I have been generally under the weather and underperforming (at least in terms of this initiative). Life is inevitably messy and unpredictable. And that’s what’s been going on. Though I have not been adhering to my daily regime…not creating individual studies, I have been working on a deeper study. When I have felt decent over the last three weeks, I have been translating the umbrellas into a larger oil painting. This has been interesting because I have imposed certain standards on the finished piece–straight lines…at first blush, the antithesis of the fluid, calligraphic lines that are typically a hallmark of my work. This has required a focus on drafting techniques. A challenge in oil. I am enjoying the change in direction which I expect is only a temporary departure due to this piece.

As Easter is days away, it occurs to me that this is a rebirth, new beginning–a sign of possibility not realized. I like that.
