Day 8: Art Resolutions-Fading holiday

Art Resolutions is a 2015 self-imposed charge to create an artistic study each day for a year. Welcome to Day 8.

The samurai will have to wait. I looked at him this morning and made my apologies and a promise that I would draw him again. A large, clear round paper weight beckoned to me on the window sill. After the touch of bittersweet wash in yesterday’s study, I found it difficult to think only in shades of grey. Color began seeping into every object I considered drawing. The paperweight proved an unsatisfying subject, even with lavender and ocean washes. Shadows kept changing with each layer of wash. I left it for a few hours and began to add pencil over the washes. The pencil did not revive my orb. Maybe I will return to it with pen on another day.

In a state of mild frustration, I began to notice the afternoon light on the fading holiday  decorations–especially, the bay leaf garlands. The lovely curved leaves with a a dulled celadon and amethyst shadows. I looked around at the holly berries in low light and they turned rust and garnet. I can see pencil textures pull the garland into the foreground. I see this garland as a border for a journal cover or maybe the background of a future biographic painting. Or…
