Day 195: Something Beautiful—The White Night

Something Beautiful is a self-imposed initiative to find a visual feast for each day of a year.

Three days. Three days until Alaska. An unexpected bucket list entry. The western big sky vistas humble. The question in my head is do those vistas expand further in Alaska. My largest Strathmore watercolor pad could not possibly do justice—but I will pack it and hope to catch more than a few 20 minute painting sessions.

Alaska is not as mysterious or seem as remote as when I was a child. But if I felt off the grid in LaFox, Illinois and Belmont, Wisconsin—I cannot imagine some sense of having travelled to the moon after the trek north. Only 350 miles from the Arctic Circle, I am curious to experience the midnight sun in Bethel and Anchorage. The Russians call it “the white night”— or, as I build my French for Paris—la nuit blanche.
