Day 139: Something Beautiful—A Kottke Groove

Something Beautiful is a self-imposed initiative to find a visual feast for each day of a year.

Beautiful instruments are still on my mind. One more extraordinary instrument to see and something exquisitely beautiful to hear.

This is a Rigaud guitar. Handcarved in Greensboro, North Carolina. Something undeniably beautiful that had me journeying back to those players who made me love the guitar—Joaquin Rodrigo, the classical guitarist, and Leo Kottke, the American folk primitivist. Terrence Malik introduced me to Kottke through his “Days of Heaven” soundtrack. A groove goes nearly through the disc I bought so long ago. Comforting. Reaching deep into the most collective of emotions that make us feel roots and community and womb-like familiarity. I love that the memory has taken me back there to the beautiful newness of musical discovery—like “Some Birds.”

Two guitars in a row, amazing works of art both. I was impressed with the first, but this is … I’m typeless! Love the new banner 🙂 Your writing is beautiful as well; I’m always eager to read the next post. A musical weekend to you.

Thanks. I’d never seen anything like the carved guitar. Human imagination and creativity are amazing things. More music to you as well. Donna
