Day 124: Something Beautiful—Me oh my, Pie

Something Beautiful is a self-imposed initiative to find a visual feast for each day of a year.

Pie. Pie is on my mind. In my heart. On my agenda. Dear Cinci sister, Becky, made a triple berry pie for my birthday. And, now we are bonded forever. Peach pie was part of the comfort eating last week at Mom’s house. Her pastry is divine.

A love affair with pie has connected me to my art sisters up north—the inspiration for our annual Art & Pie Festival. Several intense days of creating, eating pie, and drinking margaritas.

Seems like my best friends are pie people. Bonnie has a pie contest story destined for Prairie Home Companion. Kathy made her own apples into a pie. And, I loved Judy’s French Apple.

Since spring is a season of love, it is only fitting  I should pine for one of my favorites—Rhubarb Custard. The odd plant grew prolifically on the LaFox farm where I grew up. Old fashioned, strange, and so common no one thought of buying it. And, that struck me as ironic today when I handed over $5 for enough to make maybe two pies. Oh my, lattice topped, flaky, creamy, and slightly tart. Mom’s lattice tops are beautiful and I learned to make them well.

Yes, all that sent me looking for pictures of pies today. The beautiful cut pastry on this triple berry by kathrynl of Elgin, Illinois, has inspired me to create a pastry masterwork of my own. Perhaps the design will be based on the broad and curly rhubarb leaf. A beautiful feast for eye and stomach.
