Day 113: Something Beautiful—Something Functional

Something Beautiful is a self-imposed initiative to find a visual feast for each day of a year.

I grew up in a lean household. Spare. Creative. Not wasteful. We were saving to buy a farm of our own and money was spent on only what was necessary. As I grew older, I began to understand that what we lacked in money, we had in time. My Mom, a great craftsperson, taught us the merits of excellent skills. We made many beautiful clothes and items for our home from few resources.

Making something from nothing, inspired my spirit of design—especially that which is beautiful and functional. Sleek. Beautifully simple but elegant in that simplicity. Well-conceived, beautifully executed design. Like the “Rising Table” by Netherlands based designer Robert van Embricq. I only have a few special pieces of furniture, but like this piece—those items are beautifully designed to a degree of perfection. I have loved them dearly and long. That is the beauty of truly great design.
