Day 31: Something Beautiful-Isola di Loreta

Something Beautiful is a 2013 self-imposed initiative to find a visual feast for each day of the year.

Curious journey this searching for something beautiful everyday. Actually, a great creative exercise in theme definition. The idea of continuing a color theme ran afoul when searches for images with “aubergine” and “periwinkle” turned up eggplants and flowers. I keep forgetting that the world is far more literal than I am.

Coming up with beautiful images that everyone has seen is no challenge. Notre Dame, Westminster Abbey, or the flowers of O’Keefe would doubtless be appreciated again and will, but for my purposes display little imagination. Or for that matter, stimulate it. Early on, I realized I would bore myself if I didn’t dig beyond the safe, easy, or familiar. Boredom, of course, is far from the point of all this.

And so, today my process moved me from unusual colors to Siberia and then, by way of Lithuania, to the most beautiful castle in Italy— at least according to Wowpics. Isola di Loreto Castle was number three on their list of the top ten most beautiful castles in the world. For my money—number one. Dominating the smallest island in Lake Iseo in North Montisola, the castle is in Lombardy near the mountains close to the northern border. Akin to Lake Como, another paradise high on my list of places to paint.

Next September I’d planned to be in Tuscany for a few weeks. Isola di Loreto  may tempt me to consider a detour. Enchanted, remote, and much more.

Oh Donna, you and Cindy have to go to Lake Cumo in Italy and knock on George Clooney’s door. I think he’d be a gracious host. (and serve some fantastic wine too)
